Advocating for Fair Import Duties

Advocating for Fair Import Duties

Our governments have long taken advantage of us with draconian import duties on items Ghanaians bring into their own country after working hard abroad. This continues to happen because we lack a unified negotiating front with our government. They will only address our grievances if we present a united front with a large membership to negotiate for lower import duties on non-Ghanaian goods imported into Ghana.

Ghana is the only country that charges import duties close to three times the original price of a vehicle. Yet, we accept and pay these exorbitant fees because we have no unified voice to negotiate with the government. If we collectively stop sending remittances to Ghana for just three months, the country would face significant economic pressure. This demonstrates the influence we have to work with our government to reduce import duties.
